If your priority is smart home integration, Nest may be the better option. But if a more affordable base price — and more components included in that base price — is what you’re after, you can’t beat the Ring. Overall, Nest has fewer complaints about its equipment malfunctioning, but it’s definitely not exempt from issues. Ring is more popular, so it’s easier to find reviews for it online. Ring and Nest offer professionally monitored security systems that you can install yourself. However, their reputation and performance couldn’t vary more.
Ring similarly began as a company offering a revolutionary home accessory; the smart doorbell. Add in smart home options at a relatively low price, and Ring has become an ideal option for DIYers on a budget, all while the Ring video doorbell remains incredibly popular. Nest may be best known as the creator of the smart thermostat that changed the way we heat and cool our homes. But since the company was acquired by Google, it has expanded to offer customers a full array of home security equipment dubbed Nest Secure. It’s a full DIY alarm system that has customizable options, including professional monitoring.
Nest vs. Ring: Video Recording
Nest makes this slightly easier to do, with a list of clips that have thumbnails. Ring needs to improve this part of its app, as its list of events has no thumbnails, and the standard timeline view is a little fiddly to navigate. Some of the features here are the Quiet Open, which turns the alarm off, and Pathlight, which literally lights a path for you at night. The company noticed that the product became extremely popular, and so it began creating similar smart home products. Google ended up buying Nest, and by the next year, it created a full-suite of home security services and products. Like its doorbell cameras, the Ring Security cameras only come with an in-app zoom.
Ring vs. Nest: Pricing and options
The same can’t be said about security cameras, as Nest is definitely better in this area. The fact that it can capture continuous video recording is a big plus. Ring may have doorbell cameras locked down, but Nest has better security cameras overall. Although Ring has more products, the features that Nest has available overcomes it. The existence of continuous video recording is a definite advantage. Nest may only come in wired versions, but when it comes to security cameras, seeing the entire event as it happens is very important.
As the camera is constantly powered, users can take advantage of its continuous video recording capability. This is certainly an advantage over Ring, as the Nest Outdoor can keep recording without the need to be motion-triggered. Local storage options aren’t available though, so you may need a Nest Aware subscription in order to store video recordings. A free account only has about three hours-worth of storage, whereas a subscription gives you 30 days. Its most famous product is the Video Doorbell line, but it also has security cameras available. Nest vs. Ring Packages

If you don’t have wires available, you’re going to have to get them installed before you can use the Nest Hello. Ring has products that have the option to be powered by a rechargeable battery pack. All their security camera models have the ability to record videos during night.
While Ring Alarm can be armed and disarmed by Alexa, there isn’t much more integration in terms of smart home functionality. It all began with the wildly popular Ring video doorbell, but now the company also offers an attractive, easy-to-install security system at a significant bargain. While it does have some drawbacks, Ring Alarm is one of the most affordable DIY home security solutions available. All communication between the base station, the app and our indoor and outdoor cameras -- whether it happens via Wi-Fi or via cellular signal -- is encrypted. The moment that alarm is analyzed connection to video is severed and the CMC no longer has access to video or a customer's live video feeds.
